- The alkalinising buffers acetate, propionate, and citrate provide long-term relief from metabolic acidosis whilst avoiding local abomasal alkalinization, which can promote harmful bacteria and interfere with milk clotting. - Once metabolised in the liver, they convert to bicarbonate, exerting systemic alkalinising effects and supporting ongoing acid-base balance.
